“Have a nice day”
“Have a nice day”
digital images, adhesive labels, receipts, thread
An archive of transactions. I’m concerned that online shopping threatens the social connectivity of our community as well as its commercial well-being. Buying something over the counter involves both a commercial and a social transaction. Though this communication can seem innocuous, with expressions such as “have a nice day”, it actually forms a foundation of social interaction which weaves the community together.
In this artwork, the humble receipt has been twisted and woven to create a shopping bag which holds evidence of the commercial and social transactions. A montage of photographs records the meeting of hands when the receipt is handed over. These moments of exchange, an aspect of our community diminishing by the day, are archived for posterity.
